This past Thursday E! celebrated 15 years of existence at the glitzy Alice & Fifth in Sandton. As glitzy Alice & Fifth is, it’s rather tiny for these events.
Red carpet space was also tiny, and it was unfortunate for me that the photographer on my right was 3 times my size. Like WTF! We had to take turns in standing in front, give each other way, so to speak.
After the red carpet we were expected to take our equipment to our cars… prior notice was communicated by Total Exposure personnel.
We had to make our way in, and Shebeen vibes were all over the venue. I felt like I was at the Barn during my varsity days partying at UWC (University Of Western Cape). The whole set up felt like varsity nje, over crowding (or rather space had limitations). With a crowd acting like varsity students too. Attendees were rowdy, making noise while the speeches were in motion. I doubt the aircon was switched on either, because I had to take off my jacket. It was too hot in there.
Nonetheless if you came hungry you would have left full because food was flowing in numbers and not forgetting alcohol. Bonang’s House of Bonang had their own team ensuring people’s glasses were filled. I don’t drink alcohol, however I tasted BNG’s offerings and they tasted like alcohol… Gosh I don’t know what I was thinking, it’s probably the fact that the sound was bad, I needed an escape. I did not enjoy Cassper’s and Shekhinah performances because they were sounding bad. Poor Shekhinah she struggled through the sound and that was a clear indication for me to leave the dooh.
On my way out I was hoping to get a goodie-bag, and some snotty white lady told me that my green tag did not qualify me for one. Can you image going to an event to be told you don’t qualify for a goodie-bag? Like really! Luckily for her my subtle approach made her aware that I deserved one. A goodie-bag is what every journo looks forward to at events. I have received plenty of goodies to last me a life-time and I doubt I will ever get tired of the stuff even if I have some unused, unopened goodies that go back to 2016.
